Welcome to A Small Business Journal!

A letter to my fellow small business owners and those who hold us all up.

This newsletter is made up of reflections, topic exploration, and case studies with the goal of being in conversation with small business folk.

The why is simple.

I believe that small business owners are some of the most creative folks to walk this planet. Small business is the glue that holds a community together. Read my rant about this in ‘Small Business as Survival’.

I spend the majority of my week thinking about and solving problems of other small businesses. On a good day I am inside of 2 or 3 different businesses solving problems and/or enacting strategy.

I got here in an unconventional, meandering, windy way.

Prior to getting into helping other businesses, I sold my stake in a small coffee roastery that I bought into 3 years prior. I’d dabbled in small business before but this was the ‘there is no turning back’ experience.

In addition, for the past ~7 years I worked a corporate job as a software developer for a company that served SMBs. That was also a small business endeavor in my mind which I can share in a future entry.

The last three years were busy, working full time and co-owning and co-operating a coffee roastery. Mistakes were made and burnout is an understatement but the learning was crucial.

Before all that, I did other things: photography, sales, and a short stint in social work.

My beginner mind is well-seasoned and these days I get to use it to make meaningful change inside of small businesses.

By the way, If you don’t already know me, I’m Tanisha. I welcome you to be in conversation with me.
